Shanidev the God of justice
My motivation for writing this post is that I've read a lot of blogs where people have referred to Yama, Durgaa, or Dharma as the god of justice. However, Hindu texts state that there is only one God of Justice, and that is Shanidev. Shanidev, sometimes referred to as Shani or Saturn, is a notable celestial figure that represents discipline, justice, and the results of karma. Shanidev's mysterious presence in Hindu mythology and spirituality, revered by millions and dreaded by others, provides significant insights into the mechanisms of fate and the moral fabric of the universe.
Who is Shanidev?
In Hindu astrology, Shanidev is the embodiment of the planet Saturn. He is frequently portrayed as a dark-skinned god with a severe expression, holding a sword, and riding a chariot drawn by vultures or crows. In contrast to many other gods, Shanidev is usually regarded for his role in enforcing karmic consequences and administering justice rather than for his ability to bestow gifts or riches.
How did Shanidev become the God of Justice?
The story of Shanidev's birth and his association with justice and karma is mentioned in the "Shiv Purana". This text says that Chaya, the wife of Lord Surya, Felt neglected and unhappy, and made a shadow of herself to take her place because she could not stand her husband's great heat and light. It is thought that Shanidev was born out of this dark version of Chaya.
Shanidev held animosity against Surya because he felt that his father had mistreated and abandoned him. He believed that his father had treated him and his mother unfairly and without the same love and care. Shanidev became so resentful of Surya that he felt compelled to take revenge on him.

But when Lord Surya discovered Shanidev's plans, he became extremely disturbed. Surya sought solace at the dwelling of Lord Vishnu, the universe's preserver, from his furious son. Renowned for his knowledge and compassion, Lord Vishnu took action and calmed Shanidev.
Shanidev was taught the value of forgiveness and dharma (righteousness) by Lord Vishnu. He assisted Shanidev in seeing that retaliation and hatred were not the way to enlightenment. Shanidev was moved by Lord Vishnu's lessons and advice, and he made peace with his father instead of seeking revenge. Following his reconciliation with his father Surya, Shanidev set out on a path of spiritual penance and simplicity to atone for his previous deeds and achieve enlightenment. Shanidev's resolve and devotion to righteousness impressed Lord Vishnu, who appeared before him.
As the universe's guardian and the personification of kindness and generosity, Lord Vishnu saw Shanidev's promise and commitment. He observed that Shanidev had put his previous grudges behind him and was now working to maintain dharma, morality, and justice in the world. Shanidev was thus given divine authority and strength by Lord Vishnu to carry out his newly discovered vocation as the god of justice.
With the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Shanidev gained the authority to supervise the results of karma, or actions, and to administer justice fairly based on an individual's deeds. He was given the duty of preserving harmony and order in the cosmos, making sure that people received the consequences of their deeds, and assisting them in seeking reconciliation.
According to certain interpretations, Shanidev's innate characteristics and divine purpose were recognized by Lord Vishnu even at the time of his creation. That's why it seemed sense that Shanidev would turn to Lord Vishnu for support and direction during his battle with Surya, giving him the tools he needed to carry out his destiny as the god of justice.

Shanidev's association with the planet Saturn carries profound symbolic meaning. Saturn is a symbol of responsibility, discipline, and the results of one's deeds in astrology. Shanidev also acts as a reminder of the cosmic rule of cause and effect, which states that karma is inevitable.
It is thought that Shanidev's impact may be seen in all facets of life, from the difficulties and problems people encounter to the lessons they must learn from hardship. Though his presence can cause anxiety and terror, it also presents a chance for reflection and spiritual development.
Worship and Rituals of Shanidev
Shanidev devotees perform several rites and rituals to please him and win his favor. For Shanidev, Saturdays are lucky days, and they are used for extra prayers and offerings. He is the subject of numerous temples around India, the most well-known of which is the Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra.
Lord Shani devotees think they can lessen the bad effects of Saturn's influence in their life and receive benefits like wealth, health, and spiritual development by worshiping and pleasing him. Though he has a reputation for being severe, Shanidev is also seen as a kind god who imparts wisdom to others via the difficulties and hardships he faces.
